Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) is one of the most beneficial gifts from mother nature, with an almost cult like following.
A kitchen staple, it has been around since ancient times. Nowadays, ACV has seen a tremendous growth in popularity, owing to its versatile properties. A go-to remedy for everything from eliminating dandruff, to helping with health issues like heart problems, cancer and high cholesterol. This natural product is way more than just a salad dressing!
The following sections will highlight some of the many glorious benefits and uses for Apple Cider Vinegar.
1) Weight loss
Apple Cider Vinegar can help reduce weight due to the ability of the acetic acid present in it to increase satiety, reduce water retention and increase your metabolism. ACV also keeps blood sugar and insulin levels in check, helping you lose weight. When taken along with a high-carb meal, people are likely to consume approximately 275 lesser calories the rest of the day, resulting in weight reduction over time.
A study conducted showed that the daily consumption of ACV by obese individuals led to a decrease in waist circumference, belly fat and lower blood triglycerides.
- 1 tablespoon: 2.6 pounds lost
- 2 tablespoons: 3.7 pounds lost
2) Kill various types of bacteria
It’s proven that acetic acid in vinegar can kill pathogens, which includes bacteria, and limit it from multiplying. ACV has been used for treating lice, nail fungus, ear infections, warts and for other cleaning and disinfections. The genius behind modern medicine, Hippocrates, treated wounds and cleaned them using vinegar over 2000 years ago.
Apple Cider Vinegar is highly useful for naturally preserving food, with studies proving that it combats certain types of bacteria from growing in and spoiling food.
3) Cures Hiccups
A common ailment, yet one that gets on many people’s nerves. A spoonful of ACV can possibly stop hiccups. This is because of its sour taste which stimulates the nerves responsible for the spasms located in the throat.
4) Lower and control cholesterol
Research shows that many ‘risk factors’ of high cholesterol and triglyceride levels have been improved and effected by vinegar consumption. But further studies need to be done and tests need to be conducted, as this research was done on rats. Parts of this study showed a reduction in blood pressure in rats after steady consumption of ACV. This evidence may not be applicable on humans, but an observational study conducted in Harvard showed that females who ingested ACV as salad dressing, were less at risk of heart disease.

5) Detoxify your house
By using ACV mixed with equal parts water, or in collaboration with other products, not only will the consumption of industrial chemicals decrease in our houses, but your items will be disinfected and also shine like never before. A half cup of ACV mixed with 1 cup of water will make a solution gentle yet strong enough to clean kitchen surfaces, microwaves, windows, mirrors and glasses. Just don’t use on wood or metals with which the ACV can react.
6) Natural room freshener
Give this a go - clean your toilets and bathroom with ACV and a fresh smell of apples will linger in the air! It can also be used as a substitute for dish soap in dishwashers by mixing water and ACV by a 2:1 ratio.
7) Make your hair shiny
A tried and true natural remedy, using Apple Cider Vinegar to rinse your hair after shampooing will boost shine and body. Mix a 2:1 solution of water and ACV and store it in an old clean bottle and use it several times a week as a final rinse on your hair for dramatic results.
8) Balance skin’s pH levels
Rub the same 2:1 solution all over your face with a cotton ball instead of your daily toner which is filled with chemicals and probably alcohol-based. This can be used before applying your moisturizer in the morning and after washing your face at night. Other than balancing the pH levels in your skin, it can also help fade acne scars and age spots.
9) Clears acne
Speaking of acne scars, by using Apple Cider vinegar as a natural toner, its antibacterial properties keep bacteria and acne under control. The lactic and malic acids present in ACV exfoliate and soften the skin and reduce red discoloration.
10) Stain removal from teeth
Apply Apple Cider Vinegar directly on your teeth and follow with a thorough rinse with water for removing stains. An added bonus is that it keeps bad breath at bay.
11) Eliminating dandruff
Dr. Mehmet Oz recommends using apple cider vinegar as a treatment for dandruff on his website. Since dandruff is also a form of bacteria that grows on the scalp, ACV prevents it from growing by changing the pH of your scalp. For this, a slightly stronger solution is better so mix equal parts of water and ACV in a spray bottle, and spray it often on your scalp. For best results, wrap your head in a towel and allow the solution to sit for around half an hour, then wash your hair as you normally would.
Where Can I Buy Apple Cider Vinegar?
I get mine from the supermarket. However, since researching for this article I think I could probably get a better deal if I buy it online. It means buying more of it at one time, but as I am starting to use it more and more it makes sense to have it on stand by!
So, what should you look for when you buy your ACV?
Make sure it is definitely unpasteurised and unfiltered. Organic is a good to have but not essential.
